East Sikkim Silk Route Tour

Pickup and transfer: Your driver collects you from Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station for the first journey into East Sikkim's hills. The road leaves the plains and climbs towards Aritar through smaller settlements and wooded slopes. Actual driving time depends on the arrival point, traffic, road maintenance and weather; allow much of the day for the transfer.

Lampokhari Lake: If arrival timing allows, walk along the lakeside and enjoy the green slopes around this well-known Aritar landmark. Boating, where available, is an optional paid activity rather than a guaranteed inclusion.

Aritar Monastery and Mankhim: Short local visits may be arranged in the afternoon or moved to the next morning if the arrival is late. Aritar's monastery and the Mankhim area offer a first introduction to the village landscape and local traditions.

Check in to a local guesthouse, homestay or lodge. Overnight: Aritar. Walking: Short lakeside and village paths.

After breakfast, complete any missed Aritar sightseeing before travelling towards Rongli. Here, the journey enters the controlled road system for the Old Silk Route, with checkpoints and travel permissions affecting the permitted direction and timing of the drive.

Rongli and Lingtam: Follow the valley road into forested hills with streams, terraces and settlements. The area once formed part of the approach to the trading route across eastern Sikkim. Stopping arrangements depend on traffic instructions and safe places to park.

Padamchen: Pause in or near this highland village where conditions allow. Its wooded surroundings and quiet setting provide a contrast with the more exposed slopes higher up. Do not count on a scheduled village performance or guaranteed wildlife encounters.

Zuluk: Continue uphill to the former trading-route settlement, where family-run homestays are more common than conventional hotels. Settle in, enjoy the mountain setting and prepare warm layers for the following day. Nights may be cold and facilities such as Wi-Fi, electricity or room heating can be limited.

Overnight: Zuluk. Note: Permit and checkpoint requirements are verified for each departure; the journey is not suitable for foreign tourists without authorization for the restricted sector.

Today's sightseeing is centred on the mountain roads and viewpoints above Zuluk. A second night here allows an unhurried return to the same accommodation rather than forcing the day to end at much higher Nathang Valley.

Thambi Viewpoint: Leave early if local traffic rules, weather and the driver's assessment allow a dawn excursion. The road climbs through its celebrated series of bends, which can be viewed from higher sections when the clouds lift. There is no promise of a particular number of hairpin turns, a clear sunrise or uninterrupted views of Kanchenjunga.

Lungthung area: Continue towards the ridgeline viewpoints as access permits. The open slopes, prayer flags and long views into neighbouring valleys are the principal appeal. As the road rises, the air becomes noticeably thinner and cold winds can be strong, even when the sun is out.

Enjoy short stops for photographs and landscape viewing. Visitors who feel unwell at altitude should descend without continuing higher. Rather than advertising an extended high-level walk, the day prioritises vehicle viewpoints and easy movement around the permitted stopping areas.

Return to Zuluk for a quieter afternoon. Guests can spend time near the village, chat with their hosts where welcome or simply enjoy the setting. Overnight: Zuluk. Walking: Brief roadside and village walks only.

Early departure: Leave Zuluk after breakfast for the planned through-route across the upper East Sikkim corridor. The road climbs again past the hillside bends and viewpoints before reaching Nathang Valley. The route is conditional on current security approval, permits, road clearance and weather.

Nathang Valley: Travel through the broad, windswept highland landscape. The valley's sparse vegetation and distant ridges look very different from the wooded approach to Aritar. Stops are kept short because this part of the journey is near 4,000 metres above sea level.

Kupup Lake: Continue to the lake commonly called Elephant Lake because of its shape when viewed from above. The surrounding upland scenery is a highlight of the journey, but the driver must follow the actual authorized route and stopping instructions.

Old Baba Mandir and Tsomgo Lake: Where the route is open and included in the issued permissions, visit the memorial connected with Indian soldier Harbhajan Singh and continue towards the sacred glacial Tsomgo Lake. Photography, parking and access restrictions must be respected. Nathula Pass is not part of this itinerary.

Gangtok: Descend through changing vegetation to the capital and check into a hotel. The evening can be spent at leisure around MG Marg if you arrive with enough time. Overnight: Gangtok.

Road contingency: If the upper crossing is closed or not permitted, the vehicle may descend through Rongli or another authorized lower route to Gangtok. Nathang, Kupup, Baba Mandir and Tsomgo Lake must then be omitted or separately rearranged; they are not guaranteed under a road closure.

After the remote villages and mountain roads, spend a full day exploring Gangtok. Its monasteries, temples and cultural institutions offer a different perspective on the religious and social traditions of Sikkim.

Tashi Viewpoint and hilltop temples: Begin with selected viewpoints and visits to Ganesh Tok or Hanuman Tok. Clear weather may reveal distant Himalayan ranges, while mist can obscure the mountains. Some stops involve steps.

Enchey Monastery: Explore the monastery above Gangtok and observe its architecture and religious setting. Certain spaces may be closed to visitors during prayer or local observances.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and Do Drul Chorten: Visit the institute's public exhibits when open and the nearby Buddhist stupa with prayer wheels. The two landmarks are close enough to form a practical part of a city sightseeing circuit.

Depending on time and opening hours, choose an additional stop such as Banjhakri Falls Park or a local flower exhibition. A ropeway ride is optional and separately ticketed. Avoid adding multiple distant attractions at the expense of comfortable pacing.

Return to the hotel and enjoy the evening independently around MG Marg. Overnight: Gangtok.

After breakfast and hotel checkout, meet the driver for your included return transfer to Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station. The journey descends from Gangtok through the foothills towards the North Bengal plains.

Allow generous time for traffic, bad weather and possible roadworks. Your hotel departure should be planned against the actual train or flight schedule, rather than assuming an ideal driving time.
